CMP M1 Garand Ball Ammunition

The final two cases of ammunition that we had left to open contained the 280 round cans of ball-ammunition that the CMP had offered us to shoot in our M1 Garand Rifles.

These cans were not in quite as nice a shape as the match but were certainly still in good condition. (Besides if people at the range are judging you on how your ammo cans look they probably need psychological intervention.)

Garand Cartridges

The ball-ammo cans did show evidence of rubbing from the bottom of the carton.

Inside each can we found 35 fully loaded 8-round clips. Each clip of ammo had a little protective cardboard cover on it. Nice! There were three layers of clips in each can with 2 clips laying on the top. Within each layer of packing there was a clip with a white pull-tag on it which made it easier to retrieve the ammo from the can.

Clips Of M1 Garand Ammo

There have been reports in the past about some ammo shipments from the CMP containing a tiny number of cartridges sporting unusual bullets such as AP or Tracer ammo. So of course we decided to search through all of the ammo and look for something unusual.

Though it would have been kinda cool to find a tracer or some AP ammo after looking through all of the rounds we found nothing unusual.

Garand Rifle Ammunition

By the time most of my audience reads this page most if not all of this ammunition will have been depleted by a father and son team who are pretty darn proud of their CMP M1s and have taken several opportunities to go to the range and burn ammo.

We really loved the match ammo. It was quite acceptable in its accuracy. The ball stuff is far less so but is acceptable for familiarization and plinking. We have had no ammunition related stoppages or failures.

M1 Garand Barrel On Cartridge Cases

We have not yet shot enough rounds to require replacement of an M1 Garand barrel, but we sure have had fun burning up the CMP ammo we got.
